Nassau police arrested an Amityville man for attempted murder early Tuesday morning after an eight-hour standoff in Freeport.
Hostage Negotiators were called to an Oakfield Avenue home after 61-year-old Ralph Mulia put a gun to a woman’s head and threatened to kill her shortly after 8 p.m., police said.
First Squad detectives said Mulia was visiting the woman, a friend of his whose name police did not release, when he grabbed her by the neck, pulled out the gun and made the threat. He then released her but when she tried to call 911 he ripped the phone out of the wall and fired a shot at her as she ran from the house, police said.
The shot struck the storm-door glass, causing it to shatter. The victim, who was not injured, then called police from a neighbor’s house.
Police convinced Mulia to surrender shortly before 4 a.m. He was charged with second-degree attempted murder, assault, two counts of menacing, criminal mischief, criminal use of a firearm and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.
