A drunken driving upstate New York man was apprehended after he tried to flee from officers in Shirley on Monday night, Suffolk police said.
William Cartwright, 31, was pulled over by a Seventh Precinct officer on William Floyd Parkway when he “indicated he had a weapon in the vehicle and the officer asked the driver to exit the vehicle” at approximately 10:36 p.m., according to a police spokesman.
Cartwright, of Hudson, about 30 miles south of Albany, then fled in his vehicle as officers pursued him until he abandoned his vehicle on Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank near Suffolk police headquarters and fled on foot, police said.
Canine and Aviation units joined in the manhunt and found Cartwright in a yard on Yaphank Avenue about an hour after he was initially stopped by police.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful fleeing a police officer, resisting arrest and was issued multiple traffic summonses.
