Gas rationing is ending at midnight Saturday on Long Island, a week after officials in the New York metro area imposed the emergency rule to manage the fuel shortage sparked by Superstorm Sandy.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano released a joint statement Thursday announcing they are capping the emergency rule that reuired drivers to gas up on odd or even days based on the last number of their license plate.
The measure was implimented after hours-long gas lines were caused by black outs at gas stations, fuel terminals and the storm forcing the closure of the ports, cutting off the supply.
Panic over the shortages prompted some drivers to hoard fuel and top off, but the rationing measure is largely credited with ending lines that often snaked on for blocks.
New York City will continue gas rationing “until further notice,” The New York Times reports. New Jersey also ended gas rationing this week.
