The Long Island Rail Road will not be back in service in time for the Wednesday morning rush hour commute and it remains unclear when trains will start rolling again after Hurricane Sandy slammed the system.
“Our goal is to restore as much service as possible when it is safe to do so,” the MTA said in a Tuesday night statement after posting images of East River tunnel flooding, West Side Yard erosion and boats on the tracks in Island Park.
Downed trees, utility poles and powerlines remain obstacles to service restoration along with damage to signals, right-of-ways and other critical infrastructure, the MTA said. LIRR crews are working to make repairs.
New York City Subway service is also suspended indefinitely due to serious flooding. City buses are running. For more infrmation call 511 or visit www.mta.info
