A New Jersey teenager has been accused of trying to steal wedding gift envelopes from a newly married couple whose reception he was attending on Long Island over the weekend.
Suffolk County police said the West Sayville Country Club maître d’ spotted Omar Santiago in the coat room carrying a box of envelopes that had been given to the bride and groom shortly before midnight Saturday.
The maître d’ alerted the bride, Joanna Williamson, who did not recognize Santiago at first. The teen ran into the men’s room, where he stuffed the envelopes into his clothes, police said.
He then ran out the door of the catering facility while being chased down by wedding guests, who caught him and held him until officers arrived, police said.
The gifts were recovered by the police.
Santiago was arrested and charged with grand larceny. His arraignment information was not immediately available.
