Of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11, nearly 500 were Long Islanders. Almost every firehouse on LI responded to the attacks and many heroes were lost; some are still struggling with illnesses and injuries suffered in the rescue and rebuilding efforts. In many ways, Long Island has a deep connection to the events of that day. Here are some of the numerous events and ceremonies in our area that will pay tribute to those we have lost.
