Two men were arrested and another man was injured in a car crash in Westbury on Friday, police said.
Police were conducting a seat belt safety check on the entrance ramp of the Northern State Pkwy and Brush Hollow Road when they asked a man to pull over because his passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt. As police were walking over to the car, the driver, Lavarr Cannon, 26, took off at a “high rate of speed,” police said.
Police pursued and when they finally found the car, it was on fire, after Lavarr crashed his Toyota Camry into a Pt Cruiser being driven by a 58-year-old man, police said.
Cannon, of Baldwin, fled the scene, police said, but after a search he was found along with his passenger, Everett Caban, 27, on the rooftop of a parking garage on Old Country Rd.
The victim–who was not named–suffered multiple pelvic fractures and a collapsed lung, police said. He was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted.
Cannon is being charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, leaving the scene of an accident and unlawful fleeing, police said.
Caban, of Freeport, is being charged with criminal sale of marijuana and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said. He is also being charged with not wearing his seat belt.
Both will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
