Andrew Gertler is a professional sculptor who works in temporary mediums: sand, ice, snow and pumpkins.
“I create my work and then I let it go,” says Gertler. “I consider myself an ephemeral extremist.”
Several years ago Gertler won first place and the People’s Choice award at the Winter Carnival Snow Sculpting Competition in Vail, Colorado. At the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska, last year, Gertler’s team received bronze and silver medals.
Gertler says that pumpkins are a fun and easy medium for creating sculpture.
“3D pumpkin carving is a little different than traditional Jack-O-Lantern carving,” he says. “With 3D pumpkin carving we carve a relief into the pumpkin flesh and do not rely solely on carving all the way through.”
Those who are interested in observing the creation of 3-D pumpkin art, and pick up some tips along the way, are invited to stop by. Reservations are not necessary.
