Residents of a Long Island village think hanging the wash on the front lawn detracts from its image.
Great Neck Village officials this week banned clotheslines in front yards. They also banned clotheslines within 10 feet of any property line. Violators face a maximum $1,000 fine, 15 days in jail, or both.
Residents can still hang their laundry on backyard clotheslines.
The Town of Southampton passed a similar ban in 2002, but it was lifted six years later after protests from activists.
