An alleged unlicensed driver crashed into a utility pole, ran away and was struck by a passing vehicle on the Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge on Tuesday evening, Suffolk County police said.
Cesar Mendez was driving a Honda when he hit a pole on Route 111, fled on foot and ran across the eastbound lanes of the LIE, where was struck by a Nissan near exit 57 at 8:40 p.m.
The 32-year-old Brentwood man was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of a head injury.
He was issued summonses for leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.
The driver of the Nissan, 25-year-old Amanda Orbe of Bethpage, and her passenger, were not injured.
The Nissan was impounded for a safety check while Fourth Squad detectives continue the investigation.
