Suffolk County police resumed patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway on Tuesday night, five years after deputy sheriffs replaced them.
Highway Patrol officers tasked with traffic enforcement on the two major roadways had been put on other assignments after former Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy directed deputy sheriffs to take over those patrols in a cost-saving measure.
“We will work together to ensure an orderly transition,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Sheriff Vincent DeMarco said in a joint statement.
