Floral Park School, Polling Place Evacuated for Gas

Students and voters were evacuated from a Floral Park school doubling as a polling place after a gas leak on Tuesday morning, school and elections officials said.

The John Lewis Childs School on Elizabeth Street evacuation prompted school officials to move Kindergarten and pre-k classes to the Floral Park-Bellerose School.

“We do not know when we can return,” John Opiekun, superintendent of Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary Schools, said in a statement on the district website. He noted that the relocated students will not be bussed home.

Nassau County elections officials said the polling place was reopened shortly later.

A faculty member at the school told the Press the school was evacuated after 10 a.m when to the smell of gas filled the building.

It was not immediately clear if the construction that sparked the gas leak was related to the Superstorm Sandy cleanup.
