The coastal community of Mastic Beach on eastern Long Island appears to be among the areas that have suffered the most damage as a result of the superstorm.

Mastic Beach is located on the Great South Bay, on the South Shore of Long Island. It’s about 70 miles from New York City.

First Assistant Fire Chief Carlo Grover says about 100 people had to be rescued from their homes as the flood waters inundated much of the area.

Residents like retired New York City Police Officer William Connor were on the phone Wednesday morning, trying to get through to insurance companies about filing claims.

Connor says this is the worst damage from a storm in his 26 years living in Mastic Beach.
