A 22-month-old boy drowned in a backyard pond at his parents’ Sound Beach home Saturday evening, Suffolk County police said.
Officers and EMTs responded to the house on Crane Neck Drive, where the toddler had already been removed from the pond but was unresponsive and not breathing shortly after 5 p.m., police said.
The victim’s father had initiated CPR and Sound Beach Rescue personnel continued lifesaving efforts while taking the child to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was pronounced dead shortly later.
Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the incident, which appears to be accidental.
Police did not release the victim’s identity.
