A Merrick man who went to college in Rhode Island reached a plea agreement with prosecutors that will keep him out of jail after he was charged with beating a rabbit to death with a hockey stick.
Nicholas Coyle, who attended Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I., was sentenced to two months home confinement. He could have faced up to two years in prison if convicted.
A judge also order that Coyle undergo psychological counseling, according to the Providence Journal.
Investigators cited an eyewitness that saw Coyle using the rabbit’s lifeless body as a hockey puck, the Providence Journal reported.
The original charge of maliciously killing an animal was later downgraded to cruelty to an animal.
