Funeral services have been set for Peter Schmitt, the presiding officer of the Nassau County legislature.

The nine-term Republican lawmaker died Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack during a budget meeting in County Executive Ed Mangano’s office in Mineola. He was 62.

A wake will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Massapequa Funeral Home on Merrick Road in Massapequa Park.

A funeral mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Saint Rose of Lima on Bayview Avenue in Massapequa.

A special election will be scheduled to fill his unexpired term.

His death leaves the Legislature evenly split between nine Democrats and nine Republicans.
