An alleged gunman has been arrested for shooting a man in the leg in Westbury early Sunday morning, Nassau County police said.

The 22-year-old victim standing with several others on Cross Street when Jose Martinez, 20, of New Cassel, fired a single shot toward the group, striking the victim in the right leg at 12:40 a.m., police said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was admitted for treatment of his injury.

Martinez fled the scene on foot but was apprehended later the same day, police said.

He was charged with assault and reckless endangerment. He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
