Well, the secret is out! Or is it? Dan Coudreaut, Executive Chef of McDonalds Canada, stated in his YouTube video that the recipe for the special sauce on the McDonalds Big Mac has been available for consumers to find in restaurants and online for years. “It’s not really a secret,” he said.
In his “What is in the sauce that is in the Big Mac?” webcast, Coudreaut provided viewers with a tutorial on how to create their own versions of the famous burger.
He disclosed the special ingredients for the sauce: first, combine mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, and classic yellow mustard. Add white wine vinegar to the mix, along with some garlic powder, onion powder, and a touch of paprika to amplify the distinctive pink color and add to the flavor. Mix all the components together for a concoction of “contrasting flavors,” Coudreaut instructed.
Add the diced onions, chopped lettuce, and pickles to supplement the sauce and the 100% beef patty. Put everything together between the “crown, club, and heel” buns of the burger, and without having to leave the comfort of your home, you have yourself a Big Mac!
While the Executive Chef does not specify the exact amounts of the ingredients used, websites such as www.americanfood.about.com and www.topsecretrecipes.com provide exact measurements for similar recipes that yield delicious results comparable to a Big Mac made at McDonalds.
McDonalds made an effort to reach out to its loyal customers, showing that the restaurant has nothing to hide with its ingredients, attempting to uphold the mission originally stated by the founded of the McDonalds chain, Ray Kroc. According the McDonalds website, Kroc aimed to establish “a restaurant system that would be famous for food of consistently high quality and uniform methods of preparation. He wanted to serve burgers, buns, fries and beverages that tasted just the same in Alaska as they did in Alabama.”
While McDonalds has its skeptics and critics, Coudreaut attempted to appease them with his webcast, claiming that the burger he made for viewers was one of high quality, and one that was a close replica of an authentic Big Mac.
