Huntington Man Charged in High-speed Police Chase

A Huntington man was arrested after leading New York State police on a high-speed motorcycle chase on the Southern State Parkway early Monday morning, authorities said.

Troopers tried to pull over the motorcyclist for speeding eastbound near the Bethpage Parkway exit but the driver, Shakir Smith, refused to stop at 1:37 a.m., police said.

The 32-year-old man exited the parkway in Babylon, let his passenger off and then continued to flee Troopers at a high rate of speed, police said.

The passenger gave Troopers the motorcyclist’s identity, police said. He fled on foot when Troopers arrived at his house but was taken into custody following a brief foot chase, police said.

Smith was charged with fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, reckless driving, unlicensed operation and several traffic violations.

He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.
