5 Saved from Capsized Boat in Long Island Sound

A 7-year-old boy was among five people rescued from the Long Island Sound after their paddle boat capsized near Wading River on Sunday evening.

Riverhead Town Police said was fishing Sunday evening in the waters off Creek Road when a wave overturned the small boat at 9:22 p.m.

Officers who first responded to the scene could not see the group from the shore, but witnesses said they could hear the group screaming for help just east of the Riverhead town beach.

Police divers, a police aviation unit and a local boat owner responded to the scene after police received several calls of people yelling for help in the waters.

Two men ages 25 and 28 wearing life jackets were first pulled out of the water ¼ mile off shore. Two women ages 20 and 23 with the boy were located a short time later sitting atop the overturned paddle boat. Only the 7 year old was wearing a life jacket.

Police say no one required medical attention.
