Three children died and 24 were rescued after a yacht capsized and sank off Bayville during Fourth of July celebrations Wednesday night, authorities said.
Nassau County police identified the victims as David Aurelino, 12, Harley Treanor, 11, and 8-year-old Victoria Gaines, all Suffolk County residents.
Two of the bodies were reportedly found inside of the yacht during the course of the overnight response.
The 34-foot Silverton yacht, which is privately owned, had 27 people on board when the vessel overturned at 10:10 p.m., police said.
According to the Coast Guard, the 24 survivors were rescued at around 11 p.m. Police said that not all the passengers had been wearing life jackets.
The passengers were taken to area hospitals and released. There was no additional reported injuries, detectives said.
Police believe that the weather and wake from other vessels could be factors in the accident. The National Weather Service reported that thunderstorm did move through the area at the time of the incident, but that winds never exceeded 15 miles per hour.
The yacht remained submerged under about 60 feet of water on Thursday.
Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation.
