East Islip Toddler Drowned in Pool, Cops Say

An East Islip toddler drowned Wednesday after climbing into his family’s backyard swimming pool, Suffolk County police said.

Officers were called to the Laurel Avenue home around 12:40 p.m. after 21-month-old Byron Arthur was found by a family member at the bottom of the above-ground pool. He had gotten into the pool by climbing a ladder, police said.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the child’s mother performing CPR on her son.

He was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation into the toddler’s death.

The case came the same day that a 4-year-old boy was pulled from a pool at a Queens home at around 6 p.m.

Christos Voulkoudis was taken to North Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
