Fire Island National Seashore: This Week’s National Park Getaway

fire islandWalking along pristine coastal beaches or wandering through an ancient maritime forest, you might never guess that this week’s National Park Getaway is just minutes from one of the nation’s largest urban settings and probably just around the corner from your house.

Fire Island National Seashore, centered around 32 miles of Atlantic Coast barrier island, is a half-hour ferry ride from Long Island. On Fire Island, you’ll find New York’s tallest lighthouse and a federally designated wilderness area. The Seashore also includes the home of a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

If you enjoy sandy beaches, wilderness exploration, maritime and Revolutionary War history, Fire Island won’t disappoint. Water buffs will find excellent opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing. Ranger-led activities take place throughout the summer, and occasional walks and programs are offered throughout the year.
