Ex-NYC Officer Gets 15 Years in Prison

A retired New York police officer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for participating in a drug conspiracy.

Alfredo Rivera was sentenced in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday. A jury convicted him in February of conspiring to distribute narcotics and using and possessing a firearm.

The conviction was based on charges in an indictment that said Rivera boasted he could get past any police officers by showing his identification and police shield.

He was arrested in March 2010 after he drove to a warehouse on Long Island and was observed picking up a duffel bag containing what appeared to be cocaine.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Rivera “betrayed the public, his former department and his former fellow officers.”
