A man drowned after trying to retrieve a remote controlled boat in Lake Ronkonkoma Friday night, Suffolk County police said.

Sammie Weiner, 40, was at Lake Ronkonkoma Suffolk County Park with his 9-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter when he went to get a stranger’s disabled toy boat at 8:30 p.m. According to detectives, he had gone approximately 150-200 feet off shore when he went under water.

His body was found close to where he was last seen alive during a search and rescue effort by the Suffolk County Marine Dive Team on Saturday at 5:10 p.m.

The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner will examine Wiener to determine the exact cause of death.
