A dead dog was found floating in a cooler in the Long Island Sound on Thursday evening, according to Suffolk County SPCA officials investigating the case.
A Smithtown Bay Constable on patrol made the find at 6:10 p.m. about ¼ mile west of Cranes Neck off the shore of Sunken Meadow State Park.
The bay constables took the cooler to the Smithtown town dock in Nissequogue, where they called the Suffolk County SPCA.
Investigators described the dog as a brown female pit bull, 2 or 3 years old, weighing about 40 pounds.
A blue nylon leash was also found in the cooler but there was no collar or tags.
There was no visible trauma or scarring on the dog, authorities said. The cooler had no identifying markings, either.
Suffolk SPCA investigators ask anyone with information on who is responsible for this to call them at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
