Williston Park Man Guilty of Shipping Himself Drugs

A Williston Park man was convicted Thursday of trying to ship a kilogram of cocaine to himself from California two years ago.

A Nassau County jury found David Kappen guilty of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Prosecutors said the 35-year-old man and a second man shipped a television box of cocaine from a UPS store in Rancho Cucamunga, Calif. to an Auto Spa in Williston Park on Aug. 3, 2010.

Police in the UPS store notified Nassau County police after they grew suspicious that the two men were shipping a 27-inch flatscreen television across the country.

Narcotics/Vice Bureau arrested Kappen, Trent Singleton and Jamie Denton after they loaded the box into Singleton’s rental car upon receipt.

Kappen later joined Singleton and the two tried to flee police when officers attempted to pull them over. Singleton rammed a patrol car during the pursuit, but both men apprehended after a short foot chase.

Singleton pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance and Denton pleaded guilty to criminal facilitation.

Kappen faces 12 to 24 years in prison when he is sentenced July 26.
