A Long Island Power Authority substation in North Bellmore caught fire late Friday afternoon, causing mass outages throughout the Town of Hempstead.
Nearly 14,000 customers lost power, according to LIPA. Homes on Oxford Lane and other surrounding streets had to be evacuated due to the fire, Nassau County police said.
A police spokeswoman said the fire is under control after a leak sparked the substation blaze. The site is being cleaned up, police said, but it’s unclear what leaked from the substation.
Thousands of customers in North Bellmore, North Merrick, North Wantagh, Wantagh, and East Rockaway were still without power as of 5 p.m. There was no estimated time of restoration, according to LIPA’s website.
A spokesperson for the utility wasn’t immediately available for comment.
