A Mastic man who led Suffolk County police officers on a high-speed chase was found to have “a large quantity” of crack cocaine in his vehicle on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Detectives tried to pull over Harrie Shorter while he was driving a Cadillac on Bellport Avenue, but he sped off and blew several stop signs at 3:45 p.m., police said.
“Shorter also passed a school bus stopped on the side of the road and drove recklessly” passed several children, police said in a statement.

The 37-year-old man was apprehended shortly later at a house on Bellport Avenue in Bellport, police said. A search of his vehicle uncovered a stash of crack cocaine, police said.
Shorter was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of marijuana, reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed of a motor vehicle and numerous traffic violations.
He will be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
