Central Islip Mom in DWI Crash Had Son in SUV, Cops Say


A Central Islip woman was arrested for drunken driving with her 5-year-old son after she crashed her SUV late Thursday night, Suffolk County police said.

Veronica Austin was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer westbound on the Sunrise Highway North Service Road in Bohemia when she lost control and drove into the near Pond Road at 11:15 p.m., police said.

The boy was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was treated for minor injuries.

The 22-year-old woman was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger, a felony under Leandra’s Law.

She will be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
