Stony Brook, “the team that shocked the world,” best known as a school with great academics is also proving their athletic teams are not to be overlooked.
This is the first time SBU has gone to the College World Series and the last time a university from the North East made it to the College World series was in 1987.
Sam Stanley, President of Stony Brook University, explained to the Long Island Press that the team had been underestimated all season long. But that the Seawolves never let anything keep them down, whether it was a bad call from an umpire or a harsh loss.
SBU President Stanley said, “They never let anything get them down, they persevered and now they’re going to Omaha.” He continued, “I can’t tell you how proud of this team I am. They played with incredible ferocity.”
“The team that shocked the world” has been grabbing national attention with their cinderella story. Nearly 300 people, including Congressman Timothy Bishop, were in attendance at the Seawolves homecoming. Almost all the fans that came out to greet their baseball team were wearing red shirts that all say “What’s a seawolf,” a question that most people around the country are asking themselves.
SBU President Stanley explained to the Long Island Press it’s a mythical creature, which happens to relate to SBU’s baseball team because they are “creating their own myth.” He continued to say they’re a great team who had been “underestimated just because they were from Long Island.”
Coach Matt Senk was thrilled at his team’s homecoming. He could not believe the 300 plus people who showed up and the national attention his team was getting. “This is unbelievable this was totally unexpected.”
The coach continued, “We’re so excited about going to the College World Series. We can’t wait to get out there and continue to show everyone what a great team we are and what a great University we represent.”
Casey Savin, a fan of the SBU Seawolves and told the Press she attended almost all their games, is not surprised in SBU’s big win, “They’re a good team and they’ve had the determination to get this far.”
The Seawolves will be heading to Omaha on Friday where they will play against UCLA in the College World Series.
