The Third Annual LIMA 5K Run for Veterans and is scheduled for Saturday at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.

More than 1,600 runners and walkers at the event, as well as local veterans and their families, will join in the Islip-run airport race course. The route includes portions of LIMA’s runways and taxiways.

This year there is a new component because Islip Supervisor Tom Croci and the Town Board have added a $10,000 Home Renovation Makeover from the Make It Count Foundation for a local veteran.

The winner of this award will be announced during the opening ceremonies, before the race kicks off promptly at 9 a.m.

In the past two years, more than 3,000 runners have taken part in the event. In addition, partners and sponsors have worked to raise over $125,000 for the Long Island 9-1-1 Veterans, an organization that assists veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan in making the difficult transition from military life to civilian life.
