At least 176 people were arrested for driving while drunk or high on drugs on Long Island over the Memorial Day weekend, according to various law enforcement agencies.
The accused include a woman who allegedly caused a fatal crash in Centereach, a Lindenhurst charged with causing a three-car crash and a New York City resident who police said crashed through a Huntington house.
Nassau County police said they arrested 67 drivers for driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Suffolk County police arrested 52 drivers for DWI and DWAI between 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Tuesday, a police spokesman said.
New York State police arrested 19 drivers over the weekend, according to Trooper Frank Bandiero.
Suffolk County deputy sheriffs who patrol Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway in that county reported making eight DWI arrests.
Southampton Town Police released the names of eight drivers arrested for driving drunk or high, Riverhead Town Police said they arrested another five on Saturday and Southold Town Police reported one DWI suspect crashed into a tree, although full weekend DWI statistics were not immediately available for all five East End town police departments.
Glen Cove city police said they made four DWI arrests and Long Beach city police reported 12.
In one case, police said they found a driver asleep at the wheel of his running vehicle.
The tally does not include DWI arrests made by various village police departments across LI.
