Hicksville Man Accused of Grabbing Officer’s Gun

A Hicksville man allegedly grabbed a Nassau County police officer’s gun, stole a police radio and punched another officer in the face several times before his arrest, authorities said.

Manuel Carbajal was arrested shortly after midnight Monday near his Woodbury Road home. The 27-year-old man was charged with robbery, assault, menacing, grand larceny, criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.

Police said it all started when Carbajal pointed a handgun at a 63-year-old woman and her 50-year-old husband on Heitz Place. The suspect fled on foot and the victims were not injured.

An officer later stopped Carbajal on McKinley Avenue and found a loaded .22-caliber semi automatic handgun in his pocket, police said. But when officers tried to take Carbajal into custody, he repeatedly struck an officer in the face, police said.

Carbajal broke free and fled with the officer’s radio, which fell on the ground during the struggle, police said. He was later found hiding in his backyard, where he again fought officers, police said.

Carbajal grabbed an officer’s handgun and unsuccessfully tried to remove it from its holster before he was eventually handcuffed, police said.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of lacerations to his face. The police radio was recovered.

Carbajal will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
