Four members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation were involved in a one-car crash early Saturday morning that killed two men, including the driver, Southampton Village police said on Saturday.
According to police, 33-year-old Jason King and 22-year-old Duane L. White, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 2:23 a.m. Police said King was driving a 2009 Lexus GS350 when the car crashed into a tree at East Gate Road just off of Hill Street.
Police said a Southampton Village police officer came upon the accident while out on patrol.
Two passengers, 31-year-old Awan J. Gumbs, and 18-year-old Brian N. Bess Jr., suffered multiple non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Gumbs was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and Bess Jr. was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. Both were listed in stable condition.
The Southampton Village fire department responded to the accident and assisted in extricating the occupants that were still in the vehicle, police said. Several other agencies also assisted, including the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance and the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, as did New York State Police and Southampton Town Police.
