Two would-be burglars told an elderly Great Neck couple they were Town of North Hempstead workers this week, Nassau County police said.
An 81-year-old woman told investigators she was confronted by a man in the living room of her Jayson Avenue home at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The suspect said he needed to get into her rear yard regarding the installation of a fence. He fled out the side door when the victim said she was going to call 911.
She later learned that her 87-year-old husband was also confronted outside the home by a man who asked if he could take him into the rear yard, police said.
The victims were unable to provide any descriptions of the suspects. The burglars fled empty handed.
