Add women’s apparel retailers Mandee and Annie Sez to the list of retail chains closing stores on Long Island lately.
Mandee locations in Babylon, Commack, Smithtown and Carle Place will be closing by the end of this month and the Massapequa Annie Sez location closed last month, Renee Zuckerman, chief marketing officer for Big M, Inc., the parent company for both retailers, told the Press.
“We’re looking how to optimize 2012 financially,” Zuckerman said in a phone interview from the company’s New Jersey headquarters. “We’re not leaving New York market.”
The company reportedly closed Mandee’s locations in Hicksville and Massapequa last month as well.
Zuckerman said some of the stores were “underperforming” and the retrenchment is not uncommon among major retailers in the current economic climate.
There will be 12 Mandee’s in Nassau and Suffolk counties after the closures are completed and six Annie Sez locations. Both have about 150 stores in the tri-state area, Pennsylvania and scattered across other states.
Mandee is known for affordable dressy and casual attire for young women and girls while Annie Sez offers discounted designer clothing for women 25 years and older.
The closures come after the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. announced last month the closure of five Waldbaum’s and one Pathmark on LI.
