Police say they received a call that skeletal remains were found on North Street off Wading River Road at approximately 6:30 p.m.
“We can confirm that we found possible remains covered in debris and we are securing the scene till tomorrow morning so we can view it during daylight,” the Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement. “The Homicide Squad is investigating.”
At midnight, two police cars with flashing lights blocked North Street to traffic. Police say the road will remain closed through tomorrow morning.
The spot where the remains were found is in the heavily wooded Pine Barrens region and less than five miles down the road from where the partial remains of an unidentified woman were found in 2000, the same woman whose head was found on Ocean Parkway in 2011.
In 2003, the partial remains of Jessica Taylor were found a half mile away from the unidentified woman’s. Taylor’s head was also found on Ocean Parkway in 2011.
Since 2010, 11 sets of human remains have been found on Ocean Parkway. There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case, the highest sum ever offered in Suffolk County history.
