Suffolk County police arrested a Northport man on Saturday who they allege was involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a construction worker in Fort Salonga last year.
Police said Fourth Squad detectives arrested John Pappias around 1 p.m. on Saturday and charged with him leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash for the Oct. 28 incident.
Police have been investigating the crash that killed 49-year-old Victor Schultz, of Massapequa Park, who along with a coworker was on Route 25A in Fort Salonga loading a milling machine onto a trailer on the side of the roadway, when he was struck by a vehicle at 1:35 a.m., police said. The construction workers were working the overnight shift for Intercounty Paving in Hicksville at the time of the incident. Schultz was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man was not injured.
Witnesses told police that the vehicle was a dark-colored SUV traveling westbound on Route 25A, and fled the scene without stopping, police said.
Pappias is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
