Do you ever dream of a pizza place as easy as Five Guys Burgers and Fries? Well, your dreams have come true at the new Flip Pizza in Mineola, one of the fastest pizza joints on Long Island.
Flip Pizza, which opened two weeks ago, is the creation of the guys behind Nassau County’s Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Just like Five Guys, Flip Pizza is quite simple, from menu to service.
“It’s basically the same as Five Guys,” says Jonathan Magri of Flip Pizza. “Only pizza.”
Pizza-seeking patrons can head inside Flip and order food at the counter, fill up their cup at the self-serve drink station that boasts a complete line of Coca-Cola products, and then plop down at one of the more than 70 seats in the place.
Barely a minute later your personal pie arrives at your table via a runner. This slice service is a real save—there’s no need to tip at Flip.
“It takes around 90 seconds to make the pizza,” says Magri, adding that his oven is the reason for the quick cooking. “The oven was imported from Italy and can heat up to over 1,000 degrees.”
The gigantic wood oven came from Naples months ago and already it’s making a statement at Flip, where it sits tiled in warm colors—an exterior design that took nearly a week to complete—and is popping out palate-pleasing pies left and right in record time.
Now let’s talk pizza. The menu features a few choice pies and all consist of the freshest of slices.
“We are sticking to the basics,” says Magri. “Simple and fresh. We have a limited menu but they’re great items.”
The pizza pie is 100-percent Neapolitan—which means softer dough and a lighter pizza, low gluten and no preservatives, according to Magri. Sea salt is added to each slice, making it really pop with flavor.
“We don’t have freezers here,” Magri says. “Everything is so fresh.” He’s wanted to introduce Naples-style pizza to Long Islanders. “The pizza in Naples is different than what we have here. We wanted to do something simple along the same lines.”
More than a dozen pie choices are available at Flip, in addition to the option of creating your own pizza.
One of the tastiest pies is the Diavolo, which features Fior Di Latte Mozzarella, Soppressata Picante, crushed red pepper flakes, Flip’s Honey Picante and fresh basil.
For a seafood lover, opt for the Vongole, which will wow your palate with its incredible zest. The Vongole features fresh, chopped clams, Fior Di Latte Mozzarella, fresh garlic, Pecorino Gran Cru, pancetta and oregano.
Additional menu items include salads, pastas and soups. There are five salad choices ranging in price from $5 to $10, including Flip’s signature salad, Napoli, a great mix of fresh-cut green apples, grape tomatoes, glazed walnuts, mixed greens and creamy balsamic dressing.
Four pasta choices range in price from $7.50 to $10.50. Flip’s vodka sauce features pink cream sauce with pancetta and onions.
Flip also offers two soup choices, Minestrone and Pasta e Fagioli.
After your meal—and I know I shouldn’t be sharing this secret—make sure to order the off-the-menu dessert, Nutella Pie. The pie is definitely a great dessert choice for someone with a sweet tooth—Nutella cooked inside pizza dough with chocolate syrup drizzled on top. Mangiamo!
