The people behind the Occupy Wall Street movement have been encouraging the “99%” to fight against big banks. Now organizers behind Bank Transfer Day are telling people to visit their bank, take out all their money and deposit cash at a local non-profit credit union, as protesters continue the fight against big corporations.
Bank Transfer Day is set for Saturday Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Together we can ensure that these banking institutions will ALWAYS remember the 5th of November!!” a message posted on the Bank Transfer Day event page on Facebook reads. “If the 99% removes our funds from the major banking institutions to non-profit credit unions on or by this date, we will send a clear message to the 1% that conscious consumers won’t support companies with unethical business practices.”
More than 33,000 people have RSVP’d for the event through Facebook, and another 200,000 are waiting to make a decision.
The group is trying to make it as easy as possible for people to transfer their money by posting links to credit union sites in the U.S., Canada and U.K.
Here are some credit union research tips organizers posted on Facebook:
• Open an account with the one that best suits your needs
• Cancel all automatic withdrawals & deposits
• Transfer your funds to the new account
• Follow your bank’s procedures to close your account on or before 11/05
The Occupy Wall Street movement is currently in its fourth week of protests and a showdown between those sitting-in at Zuccotti Park and police looms, after the city told them to move so the site can be cleaned up. Suspicious protesters are refusing to leave, and have said the city’s attempt to push them out of the park is the beginning of a shut down of their occupation.
Organizers behind the Occupy Wall Street website have issued an emergency call to action titled: “Keep [Mayor] Bloomberg and [NYPD Commissioner] Kelly from Evicting #OWS.” Protesters are calling for a 6 a.m. defense of the park on Friday.
The mayor has said the park will be open to the public after the site is cleaned.
