Cops: DWI Suspect Killed NYPD Officer in Crash

Jonathan Lopez

An alleged drunken driver has been accused of causing a crash that claimed the life of a 25-year-old off duty New York City police officer on the Southern State Parkway early Sunday morning.

New York State police said Jonathan Lopez, 20, of East Meadow, was driving his Nissan eastbound when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Kevin Jessup of Massapequa at 5:35 a.m.

Lopez then rear-ended another vehicle driven by Dawn Smallwood of Melville, police said.

Jessup was pronounced dead shortly later. His passenger, 30-year-old Crystal Simons of Valley Stream, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Lopez and Smallwood were treated and released from area hospitals.

Lopez was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, assault and speeding.

Jessup reportedly joined the force in July, 2008 and was assigned to the 106th Precinct.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact the New York State Police at 631-756-3300.
