More than 78,000 Long Island Power Authority customers were still without power for the sixth day while crews continue to work to restore electricity after Tropical Storm Irene blacked out about half of Long Island.
LIPA has said its goal is to get the lights on for 95 percent of the Island by sundown Friday, but some outages may linger into the Labor Day weekend.
As of Friday morning, there are still about 131,000 people without electricity statewide.
There are about 2,800 still without electricity in the rest of the New York City metro area. Another 38,000 customers don’t have power upstate.
Outages peaked at about 945,000 Monday morning.
The damage is the worst on Long Island since Hurricane Gloria hit in 1985.
