also, the team generates millions of revenue right now that goes into county coffers (that’s basically coming out of Wang’s pocket).
it is amazing to me that this is possible given that they never have playoff games and draw the worst attendance in the entire league. Imagine the upside if they start doing well and selling out regular season AND playoff games on a regular basis? That would be beneficial to everyone in Nassau, hockey fan or not.

i'm with you 100% about supporting the team regardless of where they play. i felt the same way about Shea. but as it stands, it needs like 4 million in repairs just to get through the next few seasons. There may well be things we don’t know about that are beyond repair. Remember when yankee stadium rafters started falling and destroying sections of fan seating areas (fortunately not during a game though)? If the facility is not structurally sound then that could pose a major hazard.

The credit rating agencies are partly responsible for the whole subprime mortgage crisis. They stamped worthless CDOs with AAA ratings because they got paid by the same companies that were selling the mortgage-backed securities, which is a clear conflict of interest. but I suppose they could still force higher interest rates on a municipality like Nassau. Does the rating affect interest rates on current debt? None of it is locked in? I thought municipal bonds had set interest rates.

If there is another way to get this done, great. But if the team leaves I can’t see how Nassau could possibly make up for all of that lost revenue.

Wang bought a team in bad shape and has just been biding his time until he can get the new arena. Much of his losses are probably due to him learning the whole pro sports-ownership thing the hard way, but the building is definitely a significant enough factor. I wish it weren’t.

IslesFor

Thanks for toning down your posts.

When I talk about a county in default adding more borrowing, the issue (which you have not addressed) is as follows: Much like what is going on at the federal government, adding more debt to an overburdened Nassau is likely to lower its credit rating. The more debt that exist, the less likely to be repaid. Ratings agencies will ignore the fact that the arena "may" turn a profit. Lower credit ratings means higher interest costs which means more taxes to offset. Wang wasn't even willing to guarantee that said profits were going to be used to pay down the debt! just go into a general fund which, like magic, will dissappear (be spent on other stuff).

I'm not sure what you mean by the No voters listening to politicians - I haven'y heard any, just making my own assessment.

And if Wang is such an astute businessman why has he had to pump $20mill a year into the Islanders for 20 years - that's right, a quarter of a billion lost on them. Cant tell me its all due to an aging coliseum.

Okay. Call me what you want. Go right ahead.
But after you get the name-calling out of your system, tell me where you think I’m wrong.

Are you saying the pols have solutions to getting the county out of default? Because I think they are using this issue as an opportunity to grandstand. That’s what they do. They want their names to ring out, and you know damn well that they couldn’t care less about your tax bill (until election time, that is). voters who said ‘no’ are essentially taking financial advice from self-serving empty suits whose main priorities include bleeding citizens dry of their hard-earned money.

By all accounts, Charles Wang has tried his best to remove the unnecessary political element from his quest to revitalize this franchise and fan base. But they refuse to let him do things the fair way. Jacobs, Murray, and even Mangano are buffoons. They are using us like pawns to get media attention and advance their careers. That much is obvious.

NMN-
First off, I’m not whining. I’m only presenting the opposing viewpoint. No need to get angry.
I am complaining though, because people seem to think that the politicians who put Nassau in this 100M hole are more business savvy than a self-made billionaire captain of industry.

Now it’s all speculation at this point, but if this plan were approved, it could possibly reduce your tax bill. On the other hand, if the team leaves, that will most certainly raise taxes and also hurt local businesses.

Yeah I said ‘no’ voters are worthless. Maybe that was too harsh. Ignorant is more like it.

I addressed you solitary counterpoint (county being in default) before you even wrote it.. and look, I did it again! Try to keep up.

come on, is this the best you people have?? you are the same ones who voted these inept politicians into office, who subsequently mismanaged county finances and put you all in this $100 million hole. now, those same politicians tell you that Mr. Wang, who by the way is an extremely successful businessman, will not be able to turn a profit with a new arena. his BREAK-EVEN would result in the $13 hike. if he does well, your taxes will go DOWN.

the politicians piss your tax dollars away for a living, and you believe them when they say this is a bad investment. nice logic.

Did you get your screen name from your last date?
I'm not looking for anyone to feel sorry for me. I actually prefer to throw popcorn at the TV when my team loses. But as to your shortsightedness, it will most certainly cost you in the long run, as i have already explained in terms simple enough for even degenerates like you to understand. Try reading my first comment again, and see if you can come up with some valid counterpoints. Cool.
