I believe same-sex unions should be recognized and gain many of the benefits marriages get. But I believe they should not use the word marriage and that such unions would not automatically inherit the legal standing and benefits of marriage. It should be new legislation, keeping it distinct from marriage.

Marriage is and was intended to be between a man and a woman. That is how it was ordained by God. Marriage is and was intended to be a covenant between a man and a woman.

This administration (country and state) once again listened to the "minority" of the population because the majority foolishly remained silent.

This country's constitution was written with the biblical principles and ethics in mind and since this country is falling further and further away from God, this is really no surprise.

I am all for one's freedom to choose how and who they will live with as long as they do not take away the rights of another. I am for legal civil unions and a gay couple having the same rights as a man and woman do (i.e. civil rights); however, I do not believe that the law should dictate or overrule what God has put in place.

I love, like and care for many gay people. I don't agree with their sexual orientation or lifestyle but I still care for them and see them as good people. I do not dislike the sinner but I do dislike the sin, just as I dislike all sin, including those that I commit.

Just because one wants something to be a "right" does not mean that it should be. Just because we have the right to do something, does not mean that when we do it is the right thing.

Gay "marriage" is wrong on all fronts. The shame of this is that when one does speak against it, they are often attacked; therefore, the majority remains silent.

I can and do only hope that other states and this country as a whole will learn from the mistakes of New York and that this country will once again seek and find its conservative roots and help put God back in the hearts, minds and souls of people.

Who cares whether others approve of marriage equality?!?! Since when does the population get to vote on OTHERS' civil rights? What would happen in Mississippi if they let residents vote on whether interracial marriage should be legal? Civil rights are not up for ANYONE'S approval, much less a vote!

The leadership of the Conservative Party is made up of political dinosaurs, concerned only about patronage (i.e. political jobs) and other paybacks. Too bad that none of the LI Senators had the guts to stand up to their threat to deny them the Conservative line.

If any of these nine GOP Senators had been willing to show true leadership, they would have been rewarded with the votes of a lot of Democrats and Independents in the next election. Every poll shows that a clear majority of New Yorkers supports marriage equality. This is seen as a civil rights issue and a simple matter of fairness.

History will record those elected officials who voted "no." Whether they opposed marriage equality because of political cowardice or homophobic bigotry doesn't really matter. The bottom line is that they came down on the wrong side of history - shame on them.

I love the quotes from Conservative Party officials. They're becoming even more of a fringe group than they already were. The only question is whether they ever had sufficient relevance to someday be studied as a party of the past, like political parties of the mid-1800s, like the Whigs or, more appropriately, the "Know Nothings" party. Whine all you want, Conservatives. Many of us middle-aged voters, and virtually all of the younger-generation voters, see you for exactly what you are.
