‘Cars 2’ Brings in $25 Mill on Opening Day

After an opening weekend of $53 million, “Green Lantern” slipped Friday as two debut movies bumped the action movie to the number three slot heading into the weekend.

“Cars 2” topped the charts and the comedy “Bad Teacher” was a distant second, according to early results by Box Office Mojo.

The sequel to Pixar’s racing movie brought in an estimated $25.7 million on Friday, giving director John Lasseter the opportunity to surpass the 2006 version, which grossed just over $60 million on its opening weekend.

The new “Cars” adventure centers around star racecar Lightning McQueen, and tow truck Mater, who travel overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix. Of course, nothing works out like it’s supposed too, and Mater finds himself in an interesting adventure, and a top-secret spy mission.

Although “Cars 2” had a strong opening on Friday, the average critic rating was only 34 percent, according to Rotten Tomatoes. The audience, however, gave the children’s racing adventure a 74 percent rating.

The comedy, “Bad Teacher” didn’t do much better with critics, with a 46 percent rating on the movie website, but the film about a foul-mouthed teacher grossed $12 million on Friday, according to Box Office Mojo.

The opening night for the movie, allowed moviegoers the chance to watch two former lovebirds, Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz work together on the big screen.

The movie, directed by Jake Kasdan, also stars “How I Met Your Mother” funny man, Jason Segel, who plays a gym teacher named Russel Gettis.

In third, “Green Lantern” brought in $6 million in its second week in theaters. Domestically, Ryan Reynolds’ super hero movie has earned $76 million.

Landing in fourth, was “Super 8” ($3.7 million) and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” ($3.6 million) finished in fifth.
