Marriage is a religious institution. Religious institutions are unlikely to join Homosexual couples any time soon and no law can force a religious institution to do so.

This entire issue would easily be ended if the state got entirely out of the "Marriage License" business and instead handed out "Domestic Partnership Licenses" to ANY two people who want to partner for life.

Marriage from a government perspective is simply a legal incorporation between two people. It provides certain rights, protections and responsibilities to the two individuals who enter into the partnership.

A homosexual partnership seeks the same legal rights and protections enjoyed in a hetero partnership. The insistence that such a partnership be called a "marriage" is useless motion that has done more to delay than it has done to resolve this issue.

Ignorance abounds on all sides of this fight.
It is my sincere hope that all sides somehow lose and continue to do so until they all come to their senses and act in the best interests of everyone.

The "issues" being raised are just delaying tactics. No religious organization can be forced to do anything against its tenets, but if that really gives any kind of comfort and makes things move forward, fine. I don't think anyone thought this legislation would let then rent our St. Patrick's for a gay wedding.

This is a civil rights issue. Religion has nothing to do with it--and the religious organizations might want to think about how they're alienating the younger generations with political lobbying that younger people (and some of us older people, too) see merely as bigoted meddling. The majority of voters (as has been demonstrated by recent polls) have come to realize that this is a civil rights issue, and the majority now favors marriage equality. Religions can do what they want, but all citizens deserve equal treatment by their government. It's time for New York to get this done with and move forward.

Bull! These GOP senators are trying to save their own political careers. They care little that the majority of their constituents want the bill passed, or that their objections are absurd and make no real-life sense.

Just give Ball what he wants.... who cares if some jerk won't rent out his place for your wedding celebration????? There are going to be plenty of people rushing to rent spaces for gay marriages because most people are going to care a lot more about the money than about whether the couple is same sex... and for that matter, if the carve outs cause real substantive harm, then we can always fix the bill in the future once we have concrete examples, but I swear I will lose my mind if we don't get this over some stupid carve outs. Give Ball what he wants, just so long as he agrees to publicly announce that he will vote for the bill, and otherwise no deal.
