Decomposed Body Found on Amagansett Beach

by Timothy Bolger on May 23, 2011

A badly decomposed body reportedly washed up on a beach in Amagansett on Sunday.

The headless body was discovered by a passerby on the bay side of the South Fork community shortly after 12 p.m., according to local media reports.

“From what I understand the body was in such decomposition that it sounded like it did not have a head,” East Hampton Police Chief Ed Ecker told 27east.com. “But there could be a lot of reasons for that.”

The body was in a “poor state of decomposition” and missing some body parts. He did not know the body’s gender.

Ecker was widely quoted saying he did not know of any missing persons cases in the town that could be connected to the body.

A Suffolk County police spokeswoman said Homicide Squad detectives were not investigating until the medical examiner determines the cause of death.

Amagansett is about 100 miles east of an area along a highway near Gilgo Beach where 10 sets of human remains have been found since December, some of whom may be victims of a serial killer.
