It is a religious school, it has it's own set of rules.
It's not spreading hate, it's just the faith that the school bases it's running on. If it was a public school, it would be different. And this article is very biased and skewed. There were a bunch of openly gay kids in my grade that weren't treated any differently than anyone else by teachers and administrators.

This is ridiculous. If you don't believe in the values the school has, don't go there.

the hypocrisy here is amazing, when I attended this school in the 60's it was common knowledge that many of the "brothers " were gay with at least two that I know of performing acts on students that today would be sexual abuse. Then everyone just nervously laughed about it. Until the time comes when the church recognizes all it's members equally I am no longer a member.

I can't believe these stories keep popping up...everyone needs to take a step back and think about how this hate is affecting these generations of teens! They are dealing with so much abuse and way too many don't realize that support is there for them and that they aren't alone. The primary purpose of school is education but there is no beneficial lesson here. Numerous celebrities and organizations have spoken out about this, when will people learn? Keep on speaking out in numbers, it can make a difference! This video is easily recognizable characters that speak to this!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GriIWPJneQ

Freedom of Religion... I may not agree with it, but we don't need to change it either. IF you don't like what st Anthony does, don't send your kids there. End of story.

Why do so many people feel they need to control what other people do and think? You don't feel empathy for the girl, you insert your own morals, desires, and possibly even guilt and doubts into the story.

I am glad St. Anthony's can do this... Not because I have anything against gay people (I really don't), but because it should have a right to set it's own policies.

IT's not the governments job to make sure everyone loves each other.

Likewise, If gay people want to set up a gay and lesbian only school, they should be allowed.... period.

I am so glad that St. Anthony's is standing up for what they believe. We can accept the students without accepting their behavior. Where is the tolerance for Christian values? We have to tolerate everyone else's beliefs and choices. Go St. Anthony's!!!

There are many issues being raised with this controversy but the bottom line is the young kid is being damaged in this whole mess. Where were her parents who allowed her to become a poster child for some cause? Kids are kids. Honestly I love St. Anthony's and found the student body to be very accepting of all ..gay, straight, bi, handicapped, jocks and wallflowers. Everyone was given the same treatment.I think it is horribly sad that so many really ignorant things are being said on both sides(Sorry Brother Gary and Brother Joshua who I love..but) remember we don't need to talk the talk..we dont need to convince the world that we have 2000 years of wisdom..we need to walk the walk..it is something i think the faculty and students i encountered did very well. Leave the kid alone. If she is like most teenagers she will find her own way and have a shot at some happiness whatever she does.

St. Anthony's has been and will always be one of the most respected Catholic High schools in the country. It is not a public school and those CHOOSING to attend should accept the fact that there are rules and teachings that the school follows. If you don't like them don't go there, it really is that simple. They have certain policies that they adhere to and by selecting to go there you need to accept them or attend your public school. There are tons of St. Anthonys graduates who love and support the school. This article's author and the girl should e embarassed what gives her the right to criticize a school you transferred into, maybe you should have stayed at your public school and not try and attack a catholic school because you couldn't take your girlfriend to prom. Give me a break. Your public school called they want their trash back.

Should St. Anthony's be allowed, ethically & morally, to ban interracial couples because it is a private institution? Of course not! Hididing bigotry behind religion is a very dangerous practice. This student has not 'decided' she is above God's law... God made her.. she was born that way! To those students concerned about college admissions.. especially one Junior who cited Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.. Interesting how you feel when the tables are turned? THESE private institutions can discrimnate against YOU... As an Ivy alum, I would think twice about accepting a student who boasts of their Catholic values in an admission essay. Rationally argue your adherence to certain teachings, and you might win me over. Make a blanket statement that these are sacred, ancient 2000 year old teachings.. and are ergo virtuous.. and you've lost me, and lost admission if your application lands on my alumni review desk.

This article was terrible.

I am also a proud former St. Anthony's student from the 2006 graduating class, and no, my feelings about the article have nothing to do with my being an alumnus.

(A) St. Anthony's is doing ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong. The girl should have known from the start that bringing another girl to the prom would be totally out of the question. I mean, DUH you go to a CATHOLIC school. And if you can’t take this, good luck with the real world.

(B) Of course due to the religious affiliation, students are instilled with Catholic teachings all four years they attend. Part of THOSE teachings, is the sacrament of marriage, whose definition is black and white. I agree with Brother Gary; condoning a same-sex couple at prom would go against these teachings.

(C) The student body, and even staff members at St. Anthony's ARE accepting of others sexual orientations. However, when that acceptance begins to impede on sacred teachings of the Church, there must be a line drawn. Anyone who is at all religious, to whatever faith, will agree that any religious institution MUST follow and uphold their respective teachings. If they didn't, what would they be? The word Catholic would no longer have meaning; it would just be a word.

The bottom line here is that St. Anthony's is just standing by the teachings of the Church. THEY ARE A CATHOLIC INSTITUTION FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! It IS NOT a matter of "discrimination," it's a matter of St. Anthony's just doing right by the very same ideas and philosophies they teach in Theology classes every, single, day.

St. Anthony’s is a wonderful school, whose teachers and staff are committed to providing a top-notch education. And that’s exactly what you will get here. If I hadn’t had Mrs. G for Global, I would never have learned how to properly outline… or Ms. Fabs for English? Forget it, I would STILL not know how to write a GOOD college level paper, or understand that everything in a piece of literature means something--like the color of Stanley’s clothes in the opening scene of A Streetcar Named Desire, or how Mary’s hair progressively got more disheveled in Long Day’s Journey into Night. More importantly, St. Anthony’s helped me cultivate a strong relationship with God, a relationship I will have to the grave. The fact that this article was even published is just astounding to me. Why would a Catholic institution put aside ancient, holy teachings, in order to please those few students who may want to bring a same-sex date? Oh that’s right, they wouldn’t. AS THEY SHOULDN’T.

"Catholicism proscribes homosexuality, end of story."

Really? Then why allow them in at all? Why not bar the student who may "inappropriately indicate that they are homosexual?" Brother Gary says under those circumstances, he wouldn't deny them admission. So it's not very "end of story," is it?

Oh. Right. Homosexuality is BAD. Well. Except when handing over tuition. Then it's OK. But other than that, BAD.

I am also a proud Friar alum.

I think the school does a lot of things really right. It holds itself to a high academic standard first and foremost, and pushes its students to also excel in athletics and other extra curricular activities. I always felt like it was a good place, that was concerned with providing its student with a strong moral compass before entering into college and ultimately the real world.

My frustration with this story is that it is news at all. St. Anthony's is a Catholic high school and is therefore bound by the laws of the Church. Do I agree with it? No. I believe the Catholic Church really needs to embrace the concept of love, not the man-made institution of marriage.

All that being said, this is an issue that will not be resolved by slinging some mud at a prominent Catholic high school. St. Anthony's is bound to respect the views of the Church, and that is where this issue should be fought. If anyone is shocked that a Catholic high school would not allow a same-sex couple to prom, that in itself is kind of shocking.

I am a proud St. Anthony’s graduate who found this propaganda absolutely enraging to read. It is the liberal agenda incarnate. St. Anthony’s is one of the finest high schools in the nation due to it’s rigorous academic curriculum and standards, stellar sports teams and integration of Roman Catholic teachings into all aspects of student life. The school blatantly proclaims it’s strict interpretation of these teachings in the mission statement. When Angelina made the CHOICE to transfer to this prestigious school, she made the choice to abide by these teachings. It is morally reprehensible to spin this into a “discrimination” issue. It’s a black and white, cut and dry issue - it’s against the teachings of the Catholic church. THE END. Parents send their children to this school to receive a traditional Catholic education and pay upwards of $7,000 a year to do so. We should not have to conform and compromise our beliefs to satisfy the few. The author of this article and Angelina should be ashamed of themselves for trying to slander the name of such a great school that does so many good things for it’s students, their families, the community and abroad.
