Hello Kristy. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I came across this story and was very drawn to it. I have taken a personal interest in these stories since first hearing about the Norfolk 4 case in Norfolk, VA. I work in radio broadcasting and we recently featured a story of a young man who was wrongfully imprisoned for 18 years, Fernando Bermudez. An organization called 'The Innocence Project' assisted with his case. This organization specializes in handling cases, around the country, of individuals who have been wrongfully imprisoned. Perhaps you have already heard of them but in case, I thought I would pass along their information. Below is thier information, as well.

Sue, in this case you are wrongfully blaming the police for putting Bower in jail. Bower became a person of interest after a detective acting as a private citizen gave the cops information that Bower was the rapist.

the police brought bower in and they brought in people to make an ID. the cops that were involved did not believe Bower did it and tried to right the wrong. The DA could care less. Neither the cops or the DA were trying to protect Perez. In the case of the cops they were trying to do the right thing. The DA was only interested in convicting anyone for the crimes and refused to listen to reason.

After reading the article about Ronald Bower, one can only imagine the torture he has been through over the past 20 years in prison. Thank you Long Island Press.com and Christopher Twarowski for helping to bring Ronald’s story front and center in the hopes of having his case reopened. Your in-depth and detailed account of Ronald’s case should have sent a “red flag” straight up the flag pole of the criminal justice department on Long Island to reopen his case “yesterday”!
The inconsistencies you write about makes one wonder “why” is this case not being looked into further. 20 is only a number to many, however, to Ronald it has become a lifetime with no end in sight. I would ask anyone who reads Ronald’s story, with legal experience or that with an investigative background experience to please ask yourself if your knowledge, experience or time could help Ronald’s 20 years not turn into another 20 years with your help. Your insight may be just the ticket needed to help move this case forward and bring to light some aspect that has been overlooked in helping to free Ronald. God bless his brother Steven and his mother Margaret for keeping Ronald’s light so brightly burning in their hearts for his safe return home.

This travesty of justice is deplorable. The entire prosecution calls to mind the case of the young man accused of killing his parents (Tarnoff?) It has the same cast of characters: those who believed him and those in the law who fought his release while the guilty went free. At least that young man was finally released. I hope and pray Mr. Bower will enjoy the same outcome.

what i meant to say is 'allegedly involved; not involved. What the DA did in the murder case was to use the testimony of a jail house informant known as Reginald Gousse. Gousse would say Bell and Johnson confessed to him.

Gousse was finishing up a sentence for a felony. At the completion of the sentence he was going to be deported for that crime he committed in Queens County. The DA, during the trials and appeals stated on the record they didn't know he was going to be deported. But the felony rap still stood and it needed to be corrected. Gousse files an appeal to have the felony vacated because he had ineffective counsel, i.e., the lawyer didn't tell him if he pled guilty he could be deported. He filed a motion without a lawyer to have the sentence vacated when he already did the time. His pro se motion wasn't opposed by the DA. Other things happened that would be described as 'the deal of the century.' Evidence suggested that the DA helped him even further with later crimes he committed and was convicted of. They delayed sentencing so as not to go on the ICE computers. Gousse will later go on a reign of terror of kidnapping and robbery. It will all culminate when Gousse kills a banker named James Gottlieb in Jan 05, and while he pulled Gottlieb over pretending to be a police officer.

DA Brown would give a press release suggesting that he and the NYPD informed NCPD that Gousse had a history of cop impersonation to commit robberies. No such thing happened, it was the lawyer for George Bell, an attorney named Mitchell Dinnerstein that called NCPD and gave them the information. He would later receive a Good Guy Award for his contribution in solving this well publicized case.

It is my opinion that if DA Brown did get this information he would have pooh pooed it lest he look like the fool that he has proven to be with this case and the Bower case.

What I failed to mention is that the man wrongfully said he was picking up his wife at the time of the crimes was probaly due to this: He worked at his restaurant, each day between 12 to 14 hours a day. His wife held down two nursing job, one in the Bronx and one in Manhattan. He was under a vigorous interrogation. He was being accused of killing two men, one an off-duty NYPD officer working his part time job as a security guard for the owner of a check cashing business. This poor fellow probably couldn't tell you if it was Monday or Friday. He simply got his days mixed up. He didn't pick up his wife on that fateful day. that, and the false identification of a witness that probably got a $35,000 reward for helping to convict at least two of the three men involved. We will never know if he did receive that reward because the district attorney won't tell us.

I told the reporter there is an equally reprehensible case in the Queens DA office where the district attorney refuses to correct an injustice. Three men have been in prison for 14 years, and will probably remain in prison until their last dying breath.

What makes this even worse is that I have confidential and off-the-record information that many in high places in the district attorney’s office believe these men may be innocent.

The Courts routinely ignore the appeals so as not to embarrass the district attorney. The ‘system’ must be protected at all costs even if it means innocent men must rot in jail.

The ‘system’ is in a state of chaos and no one is willing to set it right, lest their own shortcomings are noted.

These men were convicted on perjured testimony, the cops concocted it and the district attorney went right along with it.

There is one eyewitness that put one man in jail for 50 to Life. That man made no confession. His only mistake was that when he was interrogated by the police he told them he was picking up his nurse wife in Manhattan when the crime was committed. The rest of it is based on the false identification of one man - an identification that was contradicted in part by other witnesses. The lying witness said the tow suspects were wearing a black coat and a dark blue coat. Two other witnesses that were closer to the scene said the killers wore light green coats.

Scientific testimony was entered on an appeal by a renowned scientist that given the best of circumstances:. Optimal lighting conditions a the distance of the observations, the witness had a less than 5% chance of making an identification at 59 feet, The witness was no closer than 180 feet for one observation and no less than 240 ‘ from the other observations. And these ‘observations’ were made 20 and 25+ minutes before sunrise. And trust me that the scientist was most generous when he said 5%.

They stand convicted of this crime and the facts are ignored by the courts. Maybe that will change soon because people are getting involved in wrongful convictions.

Dear Kristy, several years ago I read your impassioned letter in the LI Press. I attempted to email you to assure you that Lt.Carpenter is a fair man and would do everything in his power to write this wrong, if in fact it was a wrong. Obviously, Lt. Carpenter was not able to convince the district attorney that his office arrested the wrong man.

I was a detective during that time and had an office on the same floor as Sex Crimes. My recollection was that when the arrest was made that there were not too many detectives that believed your father committed those crimes.

What you may not know is that Det.Fogarty was a very sick young man due to his alcohol problem. When he was on his death bed he asked for Lt.Carpenter to come see him. He asked Carpenter to set your father’s case right. Fogarty didn’t want to go to his grave knowing he was part of an investigation that sent an innocent man to jail. On his death bed, no less. Fogarty was a decent man and a decent detective. I believe he never believed your father was guilty. Things happen, identifications, political pressure and the district attorney responded to it.

Vito Navarra had the case and went on vacation. Fogarty was assigned to keep it going until Navarra came back. I believe Navarra, a more seasoned and respected detective would have never allowed this to pass if he had his way. If Vito Navarra said your dad didn’t do it and Perez did, then that is good enough for me. The district attorney would have no choice but to hear Navarra out.

Yesterday, I went to The LI Press ( I live nearby) and told the reporter exactly what I am telling you in this message, and more.

I feel you frustration. I feel your pain. No man and his family should be put through this, not in America.

I wanted to say Thank You to Christopher Twarowski and the Long Island Press for having my Father's story make the cover once again. I only hope to soon have my Father home, where he belongs and the real rapist behind bars. He is suffering so much and it breaks my heart everyday to know that. He is 100% innocent and has been tortured for the last 20 years for a crime he obviously did not commit. What makes me even more upset is the cover up involved and the fact that a sick man is still able to roam the streets, while my innocent Father pays the price. I believe the truth will one day set my Father free.

I'm not sure what made me read this article (as cover stories are not COVER stories online). Not only was I immediately intrigued, I immediately believed, in this mans' innocence and I am distraught and disgusted at this injustice. I don't even know the whole story yet, not one easily swayed, I honestly believe good people have been wronged here. A Mother robbed of her son, siblings of their brother, children who never had their Father. Twenty years is like a lifetime. Not to go on about what is lost here, but rather how to at the least give this man & his family their day of truth & justice, or at the very least, each other and their lives back as they should be. Not to mention punishing the real predator, and giving his victims their justice after all. If there were 'how ever many' incidents of 'similiar' crimes reported then; why with todays technology & the internet (in your face)can't SOMEONE finally do their job & fix this travesty? LI Press did their job in informing me. Who job is it to inform everyone else? Their must be more victims, more evidence. Someone out there must know something. This man & his family have suffered 20 years while a sick sexual deviant has lived freely, (if he is the X-cop,that's why he is free & that's unacceptable)& someone definitely knows enough to, at the very least free this poor 'victim of injustice'. Can't SOMEONE do SOMETHING to get the details of the actual crimes out I'm sure he had other victims who will maybe come forward & ID this other real 'suspect'. Maybe they should ammend the statute of limitations on RAPE, especially, or starting with, cases that have been overturned as this case should be. As a 40 year old woman who grew up in Dix Hills, LI (can't believe I don't remember this story)just knowing the forensic breakthroughs of the past 20yrs & knowing what what the DOJ is capable of, and how the NYS not only does not want to admit to mistakes- but pay($) for them, please. This not only looks like a cover-up but also a set-up, which monetarily will cost NYS. I hope Mr. Bower not only gets his day, I hope he gets millions for what he has been through. Will someone please tell me what I can do (other than hope)to help this man & his family. To restore my faith in this country's justice system.

Deep gratitude to Christopher Twaroski and the LONG ISLAND PRESS. This wrenching and nausea-inducing story has been at the back of many minds for years and has caused many to lose faith in our judiciary. Does ANYONE believe Mr. Bowers is guilty? I don't know of anyone and that includes those who have kept him inside. Many wonderful and brave people have tried to help Mr. Bowers and failed. Thank you for getting the word out there again. Let's all pray for Mr. Bowers and his family to survive.
